This week I discovered that somehow I'm starting to feel less 'out of my comfort zone' as well. It wasn't easy at first to start these studies while being 40 something while my fellow students are 20 something or younger but somehow those differences disappeared. It seems that we are all in the same boat after all and are working towards the same goal. Which got me thinking.
In the past weeks of rest I spent more time in the gym than usual and there I was always the youngest (the gym is part of a health club and most members are above 65 years old, a lot of them even are in their 80s). They always made me feel that I didn't count and they wanted to emphasize again and again that "I was still so young"...
Yesterday one of my girlfriends who will turn 39 soon reminded me of my feelings when turning 39 myself... it felt devastating. Nearly 40! But for me turning 40 actually felt like a relief after all... life seemed easier and I felt more 'in balance' and less out of place.
I have friends of all ages... much younger, much older and it doesn't bother me at all, I don't even think about it in daily life...
What is age? And why do we feel so sensitive about it? Is it because we want to be immortal or are afraid to die?
After all it's such a superficial thing and so subjective. We do think it's important... but when we get to know people really it disappears. In friendships it doesn't really matter. We fear a certain age but once we are that age we see it really is not that important. As long as we are still able to enjoy most moments in life. We are still the same person anyway anyhow.
So much food for thought, it will take me a while longer to think about it. Feel free to give your input, from what age you are really ;)

Education is wasted on the young: much better wait until we are "ready". I graduated at 72, and like you, found friends of all ages. It only goes on getting better!
ReplyDeletewe have friends of all ages too - each enriches our lives in different ways!
ReplyDeleteI graduated in my forties. One of the best experiences of my life. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI have been feeling old lately (going to turn 40 next month). I need to get over that. I love teaching at a uni. The students do help you to feel young constantly.
ReplyDeleteYou're only turning 39... trust me...
DeleteNext week I'll be 62. I'm considering maybe starting to age.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you are only as old as you feel. Sometimes the child in me has to be let out and then the aches and pains restrict me. Important to get the most out of life.
ReplyDeleteI dreaded turning forty, but now that I'm here, it's not really that bad. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday. ☺
I haven't hit forty... but I've never been big on milestone birthdays either... it's just a number
ReplyDeleteoh my.... I'm about to turn 53.... I guess that makes me ancient!
ReplyDeleteJust remember life is a journey and try to enjoy the ride!
Thankfully I've never been too worried about my age and I think it's well cool to be friends with people of all generations. We all have a story to tell and I like to listen and learn from all kinds of ages.
ReplyDeleteHope the course goes well.Very thought provoking 6WS x
I never worried about aging...until I was about to turn 60..and then I began to fret about it for some reason! But it happened, and I survived...and now I am 62 and enjoying this part of my life very much. Yes, it is silly really to fret and worry about aging, because we can do nothing to stop it! (:>)
ReplyDeleteAnd like you, I enjoy friends of all ages!!!
Have a delightful Saturday!
Linda
Turning 30 was much more traumatic for me then turning 40. I finally feel like I know me and am comfortable. My comfort zone though, is something I rarely get out of, so kudos to you for stepping out of yours! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThis was a wonderful post full of good thoughts! Forties are a great age, when you are just getting to the point of understanding who you are and what life is all about! I don't place a lot of stock on numbers either, it is what it is, and they will come whether or not we welcome them. The important thing is to share and enjoy with people of all ages and from all walks of life, school is a great place to do that! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful thing for you! I believe in learning something new every day. This is a very inspiring post! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteAfter surviving two cancers and fighting Multiple Sclerosis for 12 years, I celebrate every day I get older!
ReplyDeleteI hit publish before I finished...I wanted to say, good for you for starting at uni, at any age!

Thanks everyone for your input, all very interesting to read :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the experience seems to be the message, Cessie, and that holds good for all of life, doesn't it? You don't enjoy the aches and pains that come along with it-they can be a bit of a surprise- but at least you know you're still alive!
