A thin line between life and death

On some days I'm so much more aware of life and death than on other days. Today I got together with one of my friends to meet her lovely baby girl and it was wonderful to see my friend and the new blooming life in her arms.

On my way back going home by train while still thinking about how magical the birth of a child is, I noticed the billboard in the picture on the left.

The man in the picture is the deceased Dutch international hockey player Theodoor Doyer. He died at the age of 54 years old from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a nerve/muscle disease).

Before dying he decided to participate in this new ALS campaign. The title says: I have already died (fight with us against this ruthless disease).

The campaign is a quite straight forward confrontation (in that way maybe typical Dutch), but I think it's a campaign with a huge impact to make us aware of how ruthless and harsh the disease is.

I did see the documentary of the making-off of this campaign so I knew it would be released, but still it *is* confrontating. And you don't know who's next. We could all get it.
There are a series of posters and billboards and commercials with different people but with one resemblance: they all have already died when the billboard or commercial was posted...

If you want to know more about this campaign, please read the press release in English to know more.

  1. Oh, my, we do need these reminders of our mortality, and a nudge to do the things we love while we can.

But, that is balanced by the new lives that appear each day.

    1. Totally agree, even if the reminders make us feel awkward ;)
